Grammar Usage - Book 2 in a series of 3
Purpose of the Grammar in Practice Series
This three-book series offers instruction, review, and practice in the basics of grammar, mechanics, and composition. The concepts build on one another, from the parts of speech through paragraph composition, so that when students complete the final book, they will have the tools necessary to write polished compositions.
This series can serve as grammar texts for middle-school or high-school students, whether they are learning the rules for the first time or simply need to review what they have learned previously.
Those teachers and students preparing for the SAT, the ACT, or state proficiency tests will find ample practice within this series. The exercises, activities, and applications were designed to improve students' abilities to perform the types of tasks these tests require: identifying errors in usage and sentence structure, correcting sentence and paragraph errors, and constructing logical, well-developed paragraphs in support of their ideas.
Features
Short, easy to read instructional sections introduce and explain key concepts, complete with definitions, explanations, and examples.
Literature-based exercises require critical analysis of specific points of grammar, mechanics, or style in an excerpt.
Workbook-style exercises let students practice applying lesson concepts.
Composition Hints offer tips and techniques for applying rules and for developing personal writing styles.
The ESL Focus feature explains points of grammar and usage that can be particularly challenging to non-native English speakers.
Writing Applications integrate the grammar and usage concepts in the lessons and ask students to write and revise sentences and paragraphs, occasionally working with a classmate.
Challenging crossword puzzles and word games keep learning engaging and fun while students apply lesson concepts.
Real-World Applications explore how people use grammar, mechanics, and sentences outside the classroom and encourage individual style and creativity. Many of them feature technology applications.
Test Practice at the end of each lesson group reviews the material in those lessons, while a final comprehensive test covers all the major concepts in the book. The tests are largely multiply-choice and modeled after state proficiency and standardized test.
