This high-interest, research-based series is designed to improve student vocabulary through active exploration of words and their meanings. The series meets vocabulary standards, which involve not only vocabulary acquisition (learning new words), but also vocabulary concept development (understanding how to increase vocabulary on your own and how to think about words and use language).
Features:
-Chapter openers engage students in the lesson; chapter objectives help focus instruction.
-Sneak Peek: Preview the Lesson is a warm-up activity that accesses students’ prior knowledge of the chapter topic.
-Vocabulary Mini-Lessons provide brief, clear instruction on topics such as how to add Greek and Latin word parts, how words have come into our language from mythology, connotations and denotations, how to use context clues, figurative and literal uses of words, and more. The mini-lessons contain plenty of examples and are designed to fit easily into a classroom schedule. The Why Learn This? section of mini-lessons explains how a particular aspect of vocabulary will help students' writing, speaking, and reading.
-Vocabulary Lists. Each book contains 33 lists of useful academic and everyday words. For each vocabulary word in the list, we provide the phonetic respelling (how to sound it out), part of speech, definition, and a sample sentence. Each list is followed by three kinds of reinforcement activities that involve reading, writing, speaking, and visuals such as graphic organizers or sketches, to be done by students independently or with a partner or group.
-Own It: Develop Your Word Understanding has students explore the definitions of the words.
-Link It: Make Word-to-World Connections has students connect the words to their own lives.
-Master It: Use Words in Meaningful Ways has students use words in different contexts and in in-depth ways, such as in writing and debates.
The cartoon character Word Master Mike appears in each chapter and uses some of the vocabulary words to describe things at his school and in his own life. This feature increases engagement by providing a fun visual and also helps students understand the words better, since Mike uses the words in a context to which students can relate.
-Wrapping Up: Review What You’ve Learned provides a brief chapter summary.
-Flaunt It: Show Your Word Understanding (Chapter Review Exercises). This section appears at the end of each chapter and can be used as a review or an informal assessment. Review exercises consist of sentence completion, word banks, matching, and writing sentences, and provide standardized-test practice. -Multiple-choice sentence completions are modeled after the PSAT/SAT.
-Activities à la Carte: Extend Your Word Knowledge (Chapter Extension Activities): This section offers a variety of chapter extension activities from which the teacher may choose.
-Appendix A reviews how to understand a dictionary entry; Appendix B provides a list of print and online dictionary sources.
-A Glossary contains words from all the word lists, plus their parts of speech, pronunciations, and definitions.
